Students of the month named; trustees request AI study session and debate metrics for student achievement

Vihaan Mishra of Los Altos High School was recognized for leadership and his ClearSight AI research project; Mishra described his organization, TASER (Teens Assisting With Communications in Emergency Response), and invited future collaboration with the district. Jennifer Smith, special education director, presented Mikey Miranda as the adult transition program’s student of the year and highlighted his vocational and artistic achievements. Mountain View High School’s May student of the month, Evan Stephenson, was also recognized for leadership, music and athletics.
Student trustees Lucy (Los Altos) and Claire (Mountain View) gave campus reports on Spirit Week, rallies, AP testing and senior events. Claire and Lucy said students are focused on GPA and AP results; Claire told trustees that many peers prioritize AP preparation because those scores appear on college transcripts and CASP tests are viewed by students as lower‑stakes.
Trustees asked staff to convene a study session on artificial intelligence in late summer (August or September) to develop a district strategy and road map for AI tools across departments. Trustees also urged administration to bring disaggregated SPSA and CAASPP/CASP data early in the fall cycle so the board can align goals and metrics when it finalizes priorities for the new school year.
Trustees and students agreed on a preference for multiple measures of achievement — including AP results, CAASPP/CASP participation and program‑level outcomes — and asked staff to prepare comparative data to inform goal setting.
