The Mountain View‑Los Altos Union High School District opened its May 18 meeting by honoring a group of retiring teachers with a video produced by the district’s freestyle program and by presenting recognition clocks and certificates.
Layla Benson, associate superintendent for human resources, introduced the tribute and quoted Maya Angelou to summarize the retirees’ impact: "I've learned that people will forget what you've said ... but people will never forget the way that you made them feel," Benson said, calling the retirees' cumulative work "a profound ripple effect" for MVLA students.
A video with testimonials and short remarks from colleagues and students followed. Several educators who appeared in the presentation or who attended in person spoke about their careers. David Lee, a teacher in the adult education program, said he has been teaching at MVLA for seven years. Michael Wilson described 31 years at Middle College and reflected on the district's support for alternative education. Brad Berry spoke about 33 years as a math teacher and the community he and colleagues created in classrooms.
Trustees read and honored retirees who attended the ceremony, including Adriana Bania (18 years), Vicki Christiansen (31 years), Sarah Block (35 years) and Joanne Thompson (noted at 39 years of service). Colleagues and board members singled out contributions to English learners, curriculum innovations and long-term mentorship. Jennifer Smith, director of special education, introduced Mikey Miranda later in the meeting as the adult transition program's student of the year, underscoring the evening's focus on student and staff achievement.
The gathering ended with an invitation to share a reception before the board's open session. The board then moved on to its regular agenda.
