Spencer County fiscal court approves routine contracts, grants and appointments; signs jail housing deal

Spencer County Fiscal Court used its May 4 meeting to finalize a series of routine but consequential actions: two swearing-in ceremonies, vendor payments and a jail-housing contract.
Appointments and oath: The court administered oaths to Brian Barry following a sergeant promotion in the sheriff’s office and to Sherry Patrick as the incoming county treasurer pending bank documentation. Both were congratulated by the bench.
Contracts and payments: The court approved a $104,000 payment to HMBB for engineering services related to the French County Sanitation District (funded by a KIA account already on deposit) and authorized a $22,627.51 invoice to Elder Construction for work at the farmers market. The court also approved several road-department parts and repair purchases bundled together.
Grants and sponsorships: The court approved a $1,000 allocation to CASA for legal assistance to county children and a $1,000 payment to Little Mount Colored Cemetery from the cemetery-restoration line to be matched with donations and volunteer labor. Members also approved a $5,000 sponsorship for the Spencer County Fair.
Jail housing contract: The court approved a one-year agreement with Shelby County Detention Center to house inmates at a daily rate of $32 per detainee. County officials noted their relationship with neighboring counties helps control costs and that inmate counts have been high on some days.
Other items: The court discussed a clerk software upgrade (initial approval later rescinded to revisit the item), approved motor vehicle and boat tax payments, and addressed pavilion utility connections (city to run main to edge of blacktop; county to connect building services). Members approved invoices, transfers and discussed surplusing an old county vehicle and ambulance logistics.
The court adjourned into executive session to discuss pending or potential litigation and deliberation on the sale or acquisition of real property under KRS provisions.
