Students describe mentorships and research; one plans publication after Alpha mentorship

At the board meeting Mrs. Bloom presented the Alpha mentorship program, which pairs high-school students with community and institutional mentors. Caroline Burns, who will attend Miami University and join its honors college, said her mentorship with the Women’s Fund of Greater Fort Wayne involved legislative research and organizing a Girls Advocacy Committee; she described developing materials for a planned 2027 report focused on girls involved in the justice system.
Andrew McGillry described two mentorship projects. Over the summer he worked with Dr. Jason Parker on a genomics-imaging project using MRI mapping and tools he described as 3D Slicer and an AI pipeline; he said the work mapped tumor genomics across sections and could have future clinical implications. During the school year he studied dorsal sacral plexus anatomy and described plans for cadaver dissection and imaging tests and said he and mentors are preparing a manuscript for submission to a specialty journal. He also referenced outreach to international experts and efforts to crowdfund additional cadaver resources.
Board members congratulated the students. Trustees and staff praised the mentorship program as a long-running district partnership that gives students research and advocacy experience and noted the presentations as a highlight of the meeting.
The board moved on to financial and policy topics after the presentations.
