At its May 19 meeting the Mathews County School Board approved multiple instructional material adoptions and budget amendments tied to state and federal funding updates.
Textbooks: The board adopted K–2 science textbooks and K–5 plus 6–12 math textbooks for the 2026–2027 school year after staff and community review. Board members thanked staff for coordinating a community review period and endorsed the selections.
Grants and budget amendments: Finance staff reported a FY2025–26 budget amendment increasing the budget by $285,264 to incorporate state and federal receipts and local adjustments. Noted revenue items included a $40,000 MTSS grant, an $84,800 school security equipment grant, and approximately $55,000 in Medicaid reimbursement increases. On the expenditure side, the amendment added funds for special-education purchased services, school improvement expenditures and one-time SOQ bonus wages and benefits.
The board also adjusted the FY2026–27 draft budget after the county adopted its appropriation of $8.5 million to the schools; the school division reduced instructional and transportation accounts (including one FTE reduction) to balance the budget, resulting in a net reduction of $88,430 from the proposed FY27 plan. Members noted the state budget was still pending and could require further amendments.
Votes: All textbook adoptions and both budget amendments passed by voice vote.
Next steps: Staff will finalize grant accounting entries before June 30 where possible and return future budget amendments as the state budget is finalized.
