Board hears multi-year facilities plan, library refreshes and public plea for equitable playgrounds

Facilities committee members said General Wayne roofing work is expected to begin May 18, a middle/high school paving bid opening is scheduled for May 26, and athletic-field improvements will be phased into the district's five-year plan rather than completed this summer. The district plans LED upgrades to the high-school cafeteria and modest library renovations across the district focused on paint, flexible seating and flooring rather than full gut renovations. The district will also pilot a jumbotron at high-school graduation to improve visibility for families.
Board members noted that the facilities team will bring a proposal back for a future vote; one participant said the proposal is forthcoming in board docs and that the project will be staged over several years rather than completed immediately.
During the public-comment period, Nick Nickrock urged the board to "approve and move forward with the construction" of modern, inclusive playgrounds at the three elementary schools that do not match the facilities at Katie Markley, framing the request as an equity issue and saying delays mean "another class of children" will miss access. He called on the board to demonstrate the district's stated commitment to inclusion by prioritizing those playground projects.
Facilities staff acknowledged the public comment and reiterated that rental-process clarifications and communication improvements are also underway to help community groups plan use of district spaces.
No budget vote or new capital appropriation was approved at the meeting; project timing and funding were described as part of multi-year planning and will return to the board for action when a proposal is ready.
