Students, teachers and community partners honored at Manassas school board meeting

The Manassas City Public Schools board spent the start of its regular meeting recognizing student and community achievements across the division.
Dr. Newman and Miss Radford presented multiple spotlights: an upcycled art contest organized by the city's refuse and recycling department in partnership with the Keep Manassas Beautiful Committee (chair Amy McCracken and coordinator Lori Hassel) produced four youth winners and prizes donated by American Disposal representatives Mike Miller and Taros Campos. Division art-show winners and the Virginia School Boards Association ribbon recipient Noah White were also recognized.
Andrew Wasam, Osborne band director, highlighted a successful marching and concert season for Osborne High School that culminated in superior VBODA assessment ratings and a fifth Virginia Honor Band designation. "When we are willing to invest the time and the money ... we can build them up," Wasam said, noting multiple competition placings and students who earned district and state honors.
The board also recognized long‑term substitute staff in a "Super Sub" segment and presented team awards for outstanding new and mentor teachers across the division. Finally the board read a resolution naming Mike Batty, Safford Subaru of Manassas and Lake Manassas Health and Rehabilitation Center to the 2026 Virginia School Boards Association business honor roll for their support of career and technical education and school activities.
