Mayor announces $30,000 Lions Park grant; parks committee eyes garden restoration

Mayor Springer told the May 20 council that Cosmopolis received a $30,000 grant to replace play equipment at Lions Park and outlined plans for removal of the old structure and installation of new age‑appropriate equipment. The project will be funded by the grant and the mayor thanked the Community Foundation for support.
The parks committee is working with conservation district representatives and pursuing an RCO recreation/conservation grant to support the Macarenko Community Garden restoration, new beds and a greenhouse. The mayor and councilor Jeremy Wynn said volunteers and local businesses have expressed interest in donating materials and labor.
Clerk Treasurer Jamie reported the city identified several deactivated utility accounts with outstanding balances estimated at about $9,000 and that the city will engage a collections contractor to recover past due amounts. Council also discussed seasonal hiring in public works to expand mowing, trimming and maintenance through the summer.
Councilors said they will continue to refine the comprehensive parks plan and coordinate any grant submittals with updated plan materials.
