Tim Gabrielson, president of the Calhoun Lake Area Association, told the board he supports the change to align the association’s name, to supply consistent signage for a DNR‑funded public access project and to honor local history. "It's going to be a great spot for kids to go fishing," Gabrielson said, and he described Reverend Calhoun's local contributions.
Pete Ble, geographic names staff at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, told the board that state and federal records currently list the body of water as Lake Calhoun but that DNR would find "Calhoun Lake" acceptable for state records and offered to answer process questions.
Commissioners praised the historical research and accepted the recommendation. The resolution directs county staff to update county records to reflect the official name. No legal or legislative changes were required beyond the county resolution; the DNR comment was recorded in the packet as part of the naming process.
The board’s action concludes the county's formal step. Any subsequent changes to state or federal map products will be done through the DNR and federal geographic names processes.
