Supervisors approve small drainage repairs and temporary closure of 178th Street for sewer work

The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors approved several routine maintenance items and a temporary road closure to allow sanitary work.

During the county engineer's report, the board approved three tile-repair actions: authorize contractor repairs on a 23 tile repair estimated under $2,500; direct county forces to repair DD79 with estimated cost under $1,500; and direct county forces to repair DD19 with an estimated cost under $1,500. Each motion was moved and seconded and recorded as approved by roll call.

The board also approved Resolution 2026-13 to temporarily close a portion of 178th Street a few feet past Charleston Beach to permit the Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District to install an 8-inch sewer pipe and manholes. The resolution set the closure to begin Tuesday, May 19, 2026 and remain until May 29, 2026, and stated the closure will remain in place until the county engineer determines the crossing replacement is complete.

A technical clarification from the county engineer explained contractors plan to excavate and place two prefabricated manhole sections, stack them, and cap them with lids so the visible portion at the surface is the access section. The engineer described the subsurface manhole installation as similar to other infrastructure work performed under private agreements.

Votes and procedure: motions on the tile repairs and the road-closure resolution were moved, seconded and passed by voice roll call with all members recorded as voting in the affirmative. No abstentions were recorded.

The board moved on to general discussion and committee reports after taking the actions described above.
