The Board of Public Works and Safety approved two resolutions May 18 that reflect negotiated changes to the city’s insurance arrangements for its public-safety employees.
A board presenter explained the town negotiated better insurance rates and will pass savings on to the fire and police workforces to increase retirement benefits and pay. “It does not change a budget any, but it really helps them out on the retirement and gets their pay up increase,” the presenter said during discussion of Resolutions 2026-2 and 2026-3.
The board approved both resolutions by voice vote. Officials told the board staff will prepare an ordinance for City Council consideration at the next meeting so the new insurance can take effect July 1.
No cost-savings breakdown, vote tallies or specific insurer names were recorded in the transcript; the city representative said the change stems from negotiated rates and that the ordinance will formalize how the savings are applied.
