Berkeley County names Megan Brooks 2026 Teacher of the Year; district presents scholarships and honors JROTC and student media

The Berkeley County School District honored educators and student programs at its May 18 meeting, naming Megan Brooks, a second-grade teacher at Cane Bay Elementary School, as the district’s 2026 Teacher of the Year.
Megan Brooks thanked the board and colleagues, saying the recognition ‘‘means a great deal’’ and that she remains ‘‘committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders’’ to support student learning. The district displayed a Teacher of the Year banner and said a formal banner would be sent to Cane Bay Elementary.
Teacher Forum leaders announced several awards and scholarships: Rebecca Kroske, outgoing Teacher Forum chair and 2024 district Teacher of the Year, was recognized for forum leadership; Alex Wharton was introduced as incoming Teacher Forum chair for 2026–27; and a Judy Reenie Passion Project Scholarship of $1,000 was presented to Ms. Brooks for use on a project at her school.
On behalf of Teacher Forum, Mr. Pete Wright summarized the forum’s scholarship process and announced two $2,500 scholarships: Kaylin Hope (University of South Carolina Beaufort-bound from Berkeley High School) and Nicole Ray Arias (Clemson University-bound from Cane Bay High School).
Student groups and career-technical programs were also honored: Stratford High’s JROTC archery team won the South Carolina NASP state championship in two divisions and earned scholarship awards; Cane Bay High’s Air Force JROTC unit received the Sword of Excellence for the second consecutive year and the board noted a cadet, Rider Livingston, accepted to the United States Air Force Academy; and Hanahan High’s Hawk’s Eye View media program won a regional award from the National Academy for Screen Arts and Sciences.
Board applause followed each presentation. The recognitions portion concluded before the public comment period.
