County leaders also cited market benchmarks and capacity: county staff referenced a local private provider’s fee of about $2,500 per autopsy as a pricing reference and said regional demand could include 12–20 neighboring counties, creating potential additional autopsy volume. The facility was designed to allow future expansion, officials said.
Staffing and timing A chief or contract pathologist is the critical hire, county staff told the committee. Officials said they had budgeted conservatively for the position to allow flexibility while job descriptions and compensation remain finalized. The county estimated the pathologist position would be hired this year and projected a possible opening window for the facility in the fall (September–November 2026) depending on final hiring and contractor schedules.
Legal and operational notes Officials said they expect to discuss memorandums of understanding or indemnity language with legal counsel before relying on outside counties for revenue and that any inter‑jurisdictional arrangement would be reviewed by county attorneys.
