Airport staff told the Gratiot County Board that the county's terminal modernization project received a $1,289,000 state grant recommendation. The announcement was greeted as major progress toward a long‑planned terminal upgrade.
Dennis (airport staff) said the county applied previously and worked through design and planning hurdles; the grant award requires the airport to finalize blueprints, floor plans and contractor coordination before moving forward. Staff also reported pending competitive grant applications for ramp/taxiway maintenance and for equipment purchases (tractor, brush hog and related items). A prior taxiway repair project is tentatively scheduled to begin in late July depending on weather and contractor scheduling.
Airport staff also reviewed recent operational items: hedging fuel purchases to avoid price volatility, leasing of agricultural parcels (mixed bidder interest), and storm impacts that included a military helicopter sheltering at the field during high winds; airport staff said they will reconvene the airport working group to begin design and procurement work necessary to meet grant conditions.
The board accepted the report; staff will return with design and implementation timelines tied to the grant conditions.
