Edison honors teachers and names 198 students accepted to high-school academies

Superintendent Dr. Alderelli told the board the academy acceptances were the result of a "rigorous application process that included both an interview and entrance exam," and said the programs expand pathways for students in biomedical science, STEM, business, computer science/programming and cybersecurity. Dr. Alderelli called the acceptances and teacher honors central to the district's vision to "empower students to shape the world with knowledge, purpose, and passion."
The meeting opened with a video and a series of school-level presentations recognizing an educator and an educational services professional from nearly every district school. The ceremony named winners from each building and invited honorees to receive certificates and photos; examples cited at the podium included Violet Russo (ELC) and Regina Shapiro (JP Stevens). Board members and attendees applauded repeatedly during the recognitions.
School leaders then read the lists of students accepted to the academies; each cohort was recognized by name and stood for applause when called. Student presenters also described other district programs: five students who participated in a Barcelona exchange said the immersion experience strengthened language skills and lasting personal ties, and the board recognized Team Orion, the school team's entry in the 2026 NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge, which finished second in its division and earned a project-review award.
The board encouraged community recognition of these awards and said the academies and extracurricular programs will continue to be central to district programming in the coming year.
