Rutherford County highlights EMS awards and approves fire-rescue budget shift to cover higher diesel costs

Rutherford County’s Public Safety Committee spent part of its May 18 meeting spotlighting emergency-medical-service accomplishments and approving a small budget amendment to cover rising diesel costs for fire-rescue vehicles.
Director Chris Clark reviewed April EMS activity, reporting 3,939 calls for the month, eight hospital transfers, an average response time of about 7 minutes 4 seconds, and $964,844 collected in revenue. Clark also highlighted EMS Week events and said two county crews received Star of Life awards for exceptional responses, including a maternal–neonatal resuscitation and a prolonged traumatic extrication case. "This past week we had two crews that were recognized by the Children's Emergency Care Alliance and they were presented the Star of Life Awards," Clark said, naming Paramedic Kayla Harney, Paramedic Maggie Allen, Paramedic James Wilson and Shift Captain Joe Shannon among those honored.
Chief Farley presented the Fire Rescue report for April: 780 calls (about 3.7% fires, 60% medical), station responses and training hours. He requested—and commissioners approved by roll call—a budget amendment that transfers money from data-processing equipment to diesel fuel because diesel prices have risen.
The committee approved both the EMS report and the fire-rescue budget amendment. Commissioners praised crews’ work and asked staff to continue tracking operational impacts of the budget shift.
