Princeton adopts 'Poppy Month' proclamation; library reports rising attendance and volunteers report cleanup success

Wanda Moore of the American Legion Auxiliary (Benson) visited the board to describe the history and meaning of the memorial poppy, distribute poppies and school contest materials, and ask residents to wear poppies over Memorial Day weekend. Mayor Stacy Johnson read a proclamation declaring May as Poppy Month; the board approved the proclamation by voice vote.
In other community items, a Princeton Library representative reported a 66% increase in April visits (382 visits in April; March was a record 453) and highlighted programming such as story time and lectures as primary drivers of attendance. The presenter asked the board for clarification on a requested five-year financial plan; board members asked the library to provide a working plan within roughly 90 days so town staff and commissioners can provide feedback during the budget process.
During public comments a resident representing PCA and local civic groups reported that an April countywide cleanup had 11 volunteers, collected about 12 bags (approximately 180 pounds) and covered roughly 4.5 miles of roadway; the next cleanup with NCDOT is scheduled for September 12.
The board thanked volunteers, public works and police for their service and encouraged public participation in upcoming local events.
