Anson County Board of Education honors student-athletes and coaches at packed meeting

The Anson County Board of Education opened its meeting by recognizing student-athletes, coaches and long-serving staff in front of a packed audience.

On behalf of the board, the chair highlighted multiple individual and team achievements across sports, from baton twirling and majorette programs to baseball, softball and track and field. The chair said the board was "proud of you and the way you represent our school system" while asking parents and community members to join the celebration.

Highlights the board singled out included Ellen Lockheart, an Anson High School feature twirler who won regional solo and strut events and qualified to compete at nationals at the University of Notre Dame; Melanie Lion, recognized for 45 years as the Anson High School majorette coach; the Anson Middle School boys track team as Southeastern Conference champions; and the Anson High School softball and baseball teams for advancing into postseason play.

Track and field received extended attention. The board named several regional and state qualifiers and noted multiple school records: a 4x100 relay team record of 42.55 seconds and an Anson High 100-meter record of 10.78 seconds. Kaia Davis was named Rocky River Conference Athlete of the Year and set a school triple-jump record (36 feet, 7 3/4 inches); Essence Davis broke the school 400-meter record.

Coaches and family members joined student honorees onstage for photographs and brief congratulations. The recognition segment concluded with thanks to parents, coaches and district staff and a reminder that the board remained committed to the character and leadership demonstrated by the students.

The board then returned to its published agenda for the remainder of the meeting.
