Public Works director previews May 28 CIP study session and updates on paving, courts, pier lights and stormwater feasibility work

Public Works Director Joe told the Hermosa Beach Public Works Commission on May 20 that the City Council will hold a joint CIP study session on May 28 and offered a roundup of current and upcoming public-works projects and related scheduling.
Joe summarized several active utility and paving projects: final repaving and restoration work is wrapping up for an LA County Sanitation District force-main project; a SoCal Gas main replacement began on 8th Street with traffic control in place; and a city-City coordination with Cal Water means the city will repave Aviation later in the year (advertise in summer, construction expected near year-end).
On recreation facilities, staff said the black windscreen surrounding Kelly Courts had been partially removed from the basketball area per direction from council and the city manager; the resurfacing contractor for tennis and pickleball courts will be awarded at the May 26 council meeting and staff is targeting an August reopening of those courts.
Staff reported a one-unit LED retrofit is being tested on Upper Pier lighting as a pilot ahead of a larger downtown lighting proposal the CIP study session will examine; the two-part proposal discussed would first retrofit street light poles on Pier Avenue and separately consider year-round string lights in the palm-tree median.
On stormwater infiltration, consultants Geocentech are updating a feasibility assessment and preliminary design for smaller drywell systems aimed at reducing cost and distancing systems from residences; staff said they are considering a joint grant application with a neighboring jurisdiction due the last day of July and may bring an item to commission in July.
Commissioners asked follow-up questions about repaving timing, contract award schedules, windscreen removal and the infiltration study; staff answered with target dates and an outline of next steps. The meeting adjourned at 7:23 p.m.
