Dallas County Commissioners Court on May 19 adopted a resolution commending the county's Older Adult Services Program for digital‑literacy trainings conducted with the National Council on Aging (NCOA) and AT&T.
Staff described in‑person workshops at the Martin Luther King Jr. Senior Center and the Pleasant Sunshine Senior Center and said the initiative has engaged nearly 400 older adults across the county and includes one‑on‑one support, cyber‑fraud education and assistance using email and mobile devices. Janette Manzano, program administrator, told the court the program is open to seniors at all levels of ability and that instructors and support staff work one‑on‑one to answer questions.
Commissioners thanked program participants and partners. One commissioner asked whether completing training qualifies seniors for reduced‑cost devices; staff said AT&T provided laptops for the training and supports instructors and volunteers, but details on device giveaways belong to partner programs and staff will follow up to clarify the equipment distribution process and whether additional partners can expand device access at other centers (commissioners mentioned the Esperanza Community Center as a planned expansion site).
The court approved the resolution unanimously and applauded instructors and volunteers; staff committed to follow up with AT&T and the National Council on Aging with specifics about device distribution and future expansion.
