Local repair-shop owner asks council to correct zoning error on longstanding commercial property
Summary
Dale Barber, owner of Barber’s Repair at 203 West Main Street, told the council his property is recorded as residential since 1969 despite continuous commercial use and asked the council to reclassify the parcel so rebuilding or succession would not be complicated by the residential designation.

Dale Barber told the Mount Orab council that his repair shop at 203 West Main Street — operated by him for 30 years and previously by Bud Weights — is recorded in county records as zoned residential despite decades of commercial use.
Barber said he has never been challenged by the village but worries about hypothetical future scenarios: if the building burned down, would he be permitted to rebuild as a commercial garage; if his son takes over, would lenders treat the parcel as residential and deny financing? He asked the council to consider changing the zoning record to reflect long-standing commercial operations.
Councilors acknowledged the concern and discussed whether zoning or site-regulation processes apply, offering to review records and advise on options such as rezoning or a formal administrative determination. Barber asked for clarity so small businesses are not disadvantaged by historical record-keeping.
