Engineer Michael told the council that local standards cap commercial driveway widths on public highways at about 24–35 feet to preserve safe maneuverability on and off a site. He said a 90-foot opening would create unregulated, potentially unsafe access and that any access exceeding the standard should occur on private property and comply with stormwater and design regulations the village has adopted.
During discussion, council members noted the risk that granting a variance could create a precedent for future requests. A motion to deny the variance was made, seconded and carried by roll call.
The council’s decision leaves the applicant free to pursue wider access entirely on private property provided construction complies with stormwater and other site-design standards.
