The McLeod County Board of Commissioners on May 19 approved a series of routine but tangible actions, including park restroom repairs, new office workstations for fairgrounds staff, the appointment of an interim Auditor‑Treasurer and a temporary hire to the auditor’s office.
The board voted to award SJM Construction LLC of Hutchinson contracts to renovate restrooms at Penberg Park ($36,546.60) and Lake Marian Park ($33,962.50), with funds drawn from the county’s capital assets budgets. The proposed work includes new exterior doors, plumbing fixtures, lighting, partitions, ventilation, epoxy flooring and baby‑changing stations. During discussion staff said the specific Lake Marian restrooms included in the contract will not be ADA‑compliant because necessary plumbing changes would exceed the current budget, but that other ADA‑accessible restrooms at the park remain open to users.
Why it matters: the projects respond to priorities identified in the county parks plan and are intended to improve visitor experience and safety. Andrew (Public Works) told the board the restroom work was an implementation priority in the parks plan.
The board also approved purchasing adjustable sit/stand workstations for fairgrounds staff from Minnesota Office Furniture for $9,262.84 (plus tax), citing employee well‑being and noise‑reduction needs in customer service areas.
Personnel actions: after Auditor‑Treasurer Connie M. Kurtzwig announced her retirement effective July 1, 2026, the board appointed Chief Deputy Auditor‑Treasurer Janet Bettsinger as interim Auditor‑Treasurer for the remainder of the term (July 2, 2026–Jan. 4, 2027). Commissioners then approved hiring one temporary full‑time Property Records and Drainage Taxation Specialist through Feb. 28, 2027, to address temporary changes in the auditor’s office.
Other business: the board adopted resolution 26‑CB‑16 appointing two members to the Hutchinson Area Joint Planning Board (Shannon Bisser and Rob Cole) and approved the consent agenda and the meeting agenda with the corrections noted at the start of the session. All listed motions were carried by voice vote.
The board recessed and will next meet at 9:00 a.m. June 2, 2026, at the McLeod County Government Center.
