Monrovia Library seeks public input to update 10-year strategic plan

The Monrovia Public Library is updating its 10-year strategic plan and will solicit public feedback in June, Library Division Manager Carrie Vance told the City Council May 19.
Vance said the library launched its original plan in 2017 and that the update will address changes in community needs since 2016–17. Staff identified six themes from internal outreach: technology and AI literacy, community connection (the library as a “third place”), support for seniors and vulnerable populations, expanded bilingual collections, growth of programming and outreach, and flexible facility improvements such as additional study rooms and a story-room expansion.
Vance outlined recent usage gains — including a 126% increase in circulation and a nearly 193% increase in programs over five years — and said outreach and bilingual collections have expanded. The library will run a patron survey June 1–30, with online and paper formats in English and Spanish, and incorporate results into a July update timed to the fiscal year.
Council members praised the library’s growth and asked for follow-up data on nonresident usage and program participation; Vance said staff track residency through library card data and would provide numbers on residents versus nonresidents.
Next steps: conduct the June patron survey, compile stakeholder input and deliver a revised strategic plan for council review in July.
