Monrovia to offer free summer open swim in partnership with school district and YMCA

The City of Monrovia will provide an eight-week summer pool program at Monrovia High School beginning in June, city staff announced May 19.
City Manager Dylan and staff said the program is a partnership among the city, the local school district and the Santa Anita Family YMCA. Public open swim and lap swim will be offered to residents Monday through Friday during daytime hours, with YMCA-led swim lessons available for a fee. The city will work with partners through a steering committee to coordinate operations, keys and publicity.
Staff described a cost-sharing arrangement in which the school district covers operational and facility responsibilities while the city agreed to split about $16,000 in additional operational costs with the district. The YMCA will provide lifeguards and instructors; staff noted Department of Public Health requirements (one lifeguard per 25 people) will determine lifeguard staffing levels if attendance increases.
Program details: open swim and recreation swim will be free; swim lessons for an 8-week course were described at roughly $135 for some registrations, with non-member pricing higher. Registrations and waivers will be handled through the YMCA. Staff said the agreement and promotional materials will be finalized and published in advance of the start date.
Councilmembers welcomed the program and asked staff to publicize registration links and age/eligibility details. The city attorney has reviewed the agreement and partners will finalize approvals this week.
