Members of the Police Commission ad hoc on Wellness and Critical Incident reviewed a draft police wellness strategic plan and agreed to finalize the document for presentation to the full police commission in June. The ad hoc decided the plan should read as a collaborative product of the group and of departmental partners rather than as operational directives for line staff.
The draft author, Barbara, circulated a fully fleshed strategic plan that participants said captures prior discussions and proposed metrics. The ad hoc asked for several practical changes before the plan is routed upward: convert outcome metrics and data sources into simple graphics or slides for public presentation, add a brief section naming an advisory council or leadership team, and include an appendix with veteran-specific resources and statistics. Participants noted training topics to highlight in the plan such as suicide prevention, PTSD (including complex PTSD), fatigue management and sleep optimization.
The group discussed version control and agreed to merge edits from attachments into a single working copy; one participant asked that the draft be shared in Microsoft Word to reduce editing glitches. The ad hoc set internal deadlines to complete edits: participants aimed to have final comments incorporated by Tuesday the 19th so the ad hoc could present a draft to the full commission on June 11. The wellness policy remains an outline and will need additional work; the ad hoc plans to spend June developing the critical-incident and peer-support policy and the wellness procedures.
The ad hoc emphasized the plan’s role as a blueprint: it is intended to guide implementation by the department and outside providers rather than to prescribe operational steps. One member who noted prior involvement with OPD said commission oversight would help ensure follow-through when the department rolls out the plan.
Next steps: Barbara will send the latest working copy (B17) as an attachment for review and incorporate comments by the agreed deadlines. The ad hoc will reconvene (moved from a holiday date to Tuesday the 26th at 6 p.m.) to finalize feedback and prepare the draft for commission consideration.
