Trustees flag gaps in grading-policy training after meeting with teachers

Trustees reported that a meeting of an ad hoc grading committee and local teachers exposed gaps in training ahead of the grading-policy rollout.

Trustee Jeremy said a meeting with seven teachers and five administrators at Placer High left the room "very quiet" when he asked whether teachers had received training on the new grading policy and its tools. Teachers, he said, had not received adequate training on essential elements such as ELOs (expected learning outcomes) and use of the ARIES gradebook so they could implement new weighted scales and workflows. Jeremy told the board he walked away "pretty disappointed" and urged more focused preparation.

Trustee Jeff and other trustees echoed that more classroom-level training and time for teacher teams to develop implementation materials were needed. Administrators noted local efforts (for example, training at KFax) but trustees said districtwide consistency was lacking. One trustee described the upcoming school year as the final implementation phase and said the district must avoid the upheaval experienced in prior policy rollouts.

District staff and trustees said they would follow up with additional teacher training, clarify policy language and provide implementation supports before the full adoption date. No formal action was taken at the meeting but trustees identified this as a priority for ad hoc committee follow-up and for early summer implementation planning.
