Opponents objected primarily to the cost given budget constraints. At least one trustee noted that $10,000 equated to many classroom supply budgets and argued the board could conduct much of the work internally. “When we’re talking about being fiscally conservative, this is spending $10,000 that is not fiscally conservative,” a trustee said during the debate.
After extended discussion of scope and alternatives, the motion carried (mover: Trustee Underwood; second: Trustee Duncan). The board’s discussion recorded the outcome as three votes in favor, one opposed and one abstention. Trustees who supported the agreement emphasized that the district had previously set aside funds for training and that the amount represented a small percentage of the general fund; opponents reiterated concern that the money could be redirected to classroom needs.
The contract authorizes the consultant to collect individual feedback from trustees and administrators in advance, synthesize the data, present findings at the evaluation workshop and support follow-up governance work. Trustees said they may revisit the approach and costs in future years.
