Board hears first reading of 2026 policy updates, including bell-to-bell cellphone restriction

The administrator listed the policies slated for revision (A200 firearms/weapons; A275 school wellness; A300 responsible use of technology and internet use; A300/301 wireless communication devices; C1175 attendance and academic engagement; C525 medical needs; F101 budget adoption and implementation; F125 purchasing procedures; G325 free and reduced-price meals; H150 public records; and other related items).
The presenter highlighted one prominent change: new state legislation requires a bell-to-bell restriction on student cellphones, meaning students will not be allowed to have phones during the school day and will need to keep them in lockers and turned off. The administrator said current practice allows limited use (for example at lunch at the high school), but next year the updated policy will prohibit in-school device use during the day.
This was a first reading; the presenter asked trustees to review the documents and bring questions before the June meeting, when the board will consider final approval. The transcript records no formal vote on the policy changes at the May 20 meeting.
The board asked that any specific questions about language or implementation be directed to the superintendent or policy coordinator prior to the June meeting.
