Southwest School Corporation board approves capital projects, vocational partnership and 2027 budget timeline

The Southwest School Corporation Board of Trustees approved several operational items and capital projects at its May 20, 2026 meeting, including technology purchases, facility repairs and an interdistrict vocational agreement.
The board authorized the purchase of 20 ViewBoard smartboards at $49,321 to be submitted to the CAPE grant committee (the district reported about $52,000 available in CAPE funds). It also approved asphalt repairs estimated at $34,800 and a late-added $27,000 water-softener purchase for the Sullivan High School cafeteria, which the presenter said would be paid from the cafeteria fund. The presenter asked the board to approve all three projects in a single motion; the board moved and approved the package.
The board also authorized an agreement with Northeast School Corporation to allow Southwest students to attend automotive coursework there next year while sharing transportation. The superintendent-described arrangement would have Northeast bring students to Southwest for health careers and Southwest send students to Northeast for automotive instruction. The board approved the interdistrict vocational arrangement for the coming year and discussed hopes to re-establish a partnership with BEu in 2027–28.
Administrators asked the board to approve a 2027 budget timeline: publish the proposed budget on Aug. 19, 2026; hold a special meeting in September for the budget hearing; and adopt the budget at the regular Sept. 16 meeting. The board moved to accept that schedule.
Routine consent items — including resignations, coaching and volunteer personnel recommendations, a termination, donations (including $2,485 for the Susan Anderson Scholarship and several small local contributions for a Sullivan Middle School STEM lab), and requests for overnight student activities — were presented and approved by the board.
The board will consider final approval of the grant request and any contract details required by the CAPE program and the Wabash Valley Community Foundation prior to purchase.
Next steps: the superintendent said the capital projects will proceed pending CAPE approval for the smartboards and that the vocational agreement will be executed for the 2026–27 school year. The board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for June 17 at 6:00 p.m.
