Franklin County's Veterans Affairs Director Josh Curry presented five "We Support You" scholarships funded by local outreach donations and community donors during the commissioners' meeting.
Curry described the program as a way to assist veterans and their families. He said applicants must have remaining GI Bill eligibility to transfer benefits to dependents and that the outreach fund can provide financial support for veterans who choose to reinlist or to transfer benefits to family members.
This year the department received 11 applications and awarded five scholarships. Curry read the recipients' names and intended fields of study: Camila Holthouse (music education, Gettysburg College), Sawyer Allen (anthropology, philosophy and pre-law, University of Penn), Kennedy Trip (advertising and public relations, Suscoani University), Tara Brown (nursing, Messiah College), and Luke Mertz (theology and apologetics, Liberty University). Curry thanked families for their service and noted the personal sacrifices of service members and their dependents.
Commissioners offered congratulations and urged recipients to consider returning to work in Franklin County after completing their degrees. Photographs followed the presentation.
