The Board of Commissioners voted in favor of a first reading to amend ordinance 23-1235, removing a permitted-use condition that had limited development in the Strawberry Lane subdivision to single-family detached dwellings.
City staff introduced the amendment requested by Chattanooga Engineering Group and explained that the change would permit single-family attached housing in portions of the subdivision where steep slopes make detached development impractical. Staff noted the planning commission unanimously recommended approval following prior public discussion.
Jason Craraven, who identified himself as the owner of Washington Investments and Market Homes, told the commission that concentrating attached homes in the back portion of the development will allow preservation of steep slopes and reduce the overall development footprint. He said the proposed townhomes would be located in the rear quasi-hammerhead area while the front portion of the subdivision would remain single-family detached.
The commission moved, seconded and approved the amendment on first reading. The transcript records roll-call responses as Mayor Stephanie Dalton ("yes"), Vice Mayor Holly Barry ("yes"), an entry recorded as "Commissioner Fair Harvey" ("yes"), Commissioner Terry Holmes ("yes"), and Commissioner Hayes Wilkinson ("yes"). The ordinance will return for a second reading.
