Controversy over school calendar: board adopts single-year 2027–28 calendar after public pushback

Orange Unified trustees on May 21 moved to adopt the district’s 2027–28 school calendar but delayed decisions on two additional multi‑year calendar options after significant public input and trustee concerns.
Staff had presented three calendar options. The proposed changes included shifting one professional development day from the traditional August back‑to‑school window to a spring PD day (proposed in late February), and a separate teacher prep day immediately before the first day of instruction. Some teachers and many parents urged the board to reconsider the timing, arguing that holding only a single on‑site professional day immediately before students arrive leaves teachers insufficient time to set up classrooms and to give very young children (TK/K) a gentler first day.
Public commenters emphasized concerns about locked restrooms and classroom time, and classroom teachers asked that the calendar committee meet more than once before the board signs off on multi‑year options. Trustees debated the balance between giving families multi‑year certainty (many parents plan vacations a year in advance) and allowing more committee vetting. Following debate, by roll‑call the board approved the single 2027–28 calendar and asked staff to continue committee work on future multi‑year calendars with additional stakeholder input.
What this means: The district will publish the 2027–28 start/end dates and workdays; staff agreed to reconvene the calendar committee to refine the process, revisit PD timing and clarify site-level meet‑and‑greet practices for youngest learners.
