The Corte Madera Town Council accepted the town’s AB 2561 annual report on staffing, vacancies and recruitment efforts on May 19.
Assistant Town Manager Rebecca Vaughn presented the statutorily required overview. As of May 7, 2026 the town reported 42 budgeted full‑time positions and three current vacancies — an overall vacancy rate of 7.14%. The SEIU Local 1021 bargaining unit had two vacancies out of nine positions, a 22.22% vacancy rate, while the confidential/professional/mid‑management group had one vacancy out of 28 positions (3.57%); department heads had no vacancies.
Vaughn said the two SEIU vacancies relate to a recently added maintenance-worker position and a retirement. Staff reported ongoing recruitment activity, conditional offer letters extended, and steps to improve outreach and retention, including enhanced applicant communication, promotion of benefits and flexible scheduling, and reviewing compensation for hard‑to‑fill classifications.
Council members asked whether vacancies resulted from a shortage of qualified applicants or pay levels. Staff said the maintenance-worker role requires a broad skill set making candidates scarce and that neighboring jurisdictions face similar hiring challenges; staff also flagged the associate‑level engineer classification as an area where compensation adjustments and enhanced recruitment are being considered.
The council moved, seconded and voted to accept the report. No public speakers addressed the item.
