District resource center to continue summer services, offers ESL class with about 30 parents enrolled

Dr. Laura Cortés, superintendent of the district, said the school system’s family resource center will continue to host partner agencies and services through the summer and invited the center’s director to outline offerings for families.

The center — described on the program as "GUST" — coordinates weekly visits from partner agencies that provide direct assistance to students and families. "Parte de esos servicios incluye el departamento de salud del condado, el programa del CORE, el departamento de desempleo y desarrollo de empleo, la clínica móvil del Valle de Salinas y el banco de alimentos del condado de Monterey," said Mayira Vía Gómez, the district’s director of family and community and student services. She credited those partnerships with delivering “servicios vitales para nuestra comunidad.”

Gómez said the center will continue the services offered during the school year into the summer months and highlighted an English-as-a-second-language class for parents. "Tenemos ahorita 30 papás que se han registrado para esa clase," she said. She added that other ongoing supports and the resource center itself will be available throughout the summer, encouraging families to visit.

The segment presented the resource center as a hub linking families to public-health services, employment support and food assistance through recurring partner visits. No formal actions, votes or new funding amounts were announced during the briefing.

The program concluded with Cortés thanking Gómez and her team for their work and reiterating that the center will remain open over the summer.
