Tree Board members used their May 20 meeting to plan public-facing education and outreach for the coming fiscal year, including two Tree Board workshops and expanded website content.
Members discussed a two-year program of public events called "Sunset Green Gatherings" that will combine Tree Board workshops with Environmental Resource Committee programming. The town has budgeted funds beginning July 1 for six total workshops across committees; the Tree Board is expected to host two. Suggested topics included pruning demonstrations, storm-proofing trees, planting native species, and hands-on sessions for children. "We asked the children who came to the booth, would you like to have a program at the park… and they were all excited about it," one member said of Greenwave responses.
Board members also discussed improving the Tree Board web page to host flyers, photos, PDFs and links to state resources (for example, Clemson’s home and garden information on crepe myrtle bark scale). Kimberly and Sydney (town staff) offered technical help and recommended a subcommittee to assemble materials and ensure copyright compliance. Members agreed to collect photos at future events and to coordinate website content prior to Sunset at Sunset (first Saturday in October, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.).
Next steps: volunteers will form a subcommittee to meet with town web staff, compile Greenwave contact lists and suggested topics, and bring a content proposal to the next board meeting.
