Council postpones action on Wells Township water expansion support to May 28

The Eskanaba City Council on May 21 declined to adopt Resolution 26‑08 supporting Wells Township’s water system expansion and instead postponed consideration until the special May 28 meeting.
Staff explained the resolution would support a final project planning document and designate an authorized project representative, but several councilors said they had not seen the planning document in the packet and were uncomfortable approving adoption without reviewing the final plan and the results of a Wells Township meeting held the prior evening.
Council members also pressed staff for clarity on whether Eskanaba ratepayers could face long‑term liability if the city later agreed to provide service, and whether any connections would require rate negotiations. Staff said the motion being considered could be written simply as a statement of support for Wells Township pursuing the plan and that the city was not committing to loan or rate obligations by approving a resolution of support; nevertheless, the council voted to postpone until May 28 so members could review the Wells Township meeting outcome and see the planning document.
