A parent testified at the May 19 San Bernardino City Unified School District board meeting that her child with special needs was injured on campus, lost two front teeth, and was sent home on the school bus without emergency medical attention.
The parent, who identified herself as Alena during public comment, said the most recent incident occurred May 12. She told the board she was told by school staff the child had "committed self harm," a description she disputed; she said her daughter is nonverbal and on the autism spectrum and that school staff failed to call 911 or notify parents before placing the child on the bus.
"No child should ever lose their teeth physically, bleed and crying and not get medical treatment," the parent said, closing her remarks by saying she had filed formal complaints with the district's special education director and with the district police and had a case number.
Board members responded that they would look into the parent's complaints. Trustee Mr. Tilman thanked the parent for coming forward and said the board would investigate. Superintendent Mauricio Ariano and staff later told the parent they would follow up through district channels.
Why it matters: The parent raised concerns about student safety and supervision in special‑education classrooms and about how the district documents incidents and informs families. The board publicly committed to investigating and following up through formal channels.
Next steps: The parent said she has a scheduled meeting with district staff and that a police report has been filed; board members asked staff to pursue the matter and follow up with the family.
