Board approves negotiated health insurance changes to limit premium impact

The OAKES 41 School Board voted on May 19 to approve the negotiations committee’s recommendation to change the district’s employee health insurance plan to limit rising premium costs.
Vice President Leo introduced the committee’s analysis, saying the district and bargaining representatives had reviewed plan options and selected an approach intended to yield savings while making the fewest possible changes to coverage. Committee members described tradeoffs between traditional and high-deductible plan designs and noted that market changes have reduced the prevalence of plans that fully cover costs after deductible.
During discussion, staff and board members described estimates showing the cost increase would have been larger without a change; the committee presented a compromise option to limit budget pressure. The board held a roll-call vote; Patty Kelly, Ryan Rosenall, Ryan Ser, Sheila Nagel and Monica Hima were recorded as voting yes and the motion passed.
Board members acknowledged the decision’s impact on employees and said the district will continue monitoring health-care market changes and communicate specifics to staff. No further action on implementation details was recorded during the meeting.
