The Board of Supervisors approved an updated fire-impact nexus study and revised development mitigation fees for the Lake Valley Fire Protection District during a public hearing on May 19.
CAO staff said the district’s prior nexus study dated to 2018 and had included a consumer-price-index escalation option that the district never implemented. Under the Mitigation Fee Act, the district must update its nexus analysis every eight years; staff recommended adoption of the updated study and the associated fee schedule to ensure the district’s financial sustainability.
Chief John McMur (as recorded in the meeting) said Lake Valley Fire has improved its fiscal position and is planning for the future, including potential expansion to serve anticipated growth.
The board closed the hearing after no public comment and adopted the resolution. Staff said the fees will take effect 60 days after adoption to allow implementation steps and public notice.
Why it matters: updated fees aim to align developer contributions with current equipment and facility costs for the district. The action authorizes the county to collect fees on behalf of the special district as required by state law.
The motion to approve the nexus study and fee adoption passed with a recorded vote (4–0, one supervisor absent).
