Commission approves multiple subdivisions, discusses chip-seal costs and animal shelter property status

County engineer Mr. Massie presented several subdivision items to the Limestone County Commission and commissioners approved the proposals after a brief procedural question about whether to take them together.
"We have three subdivisions for you guys to approve," Mr. Massie said, listing Ed Ray Road Estates (a minor creating eight lots in District 2), Abby Brook subdivision phase one and a replat of Abby Brook phase 4 common area, and a Summers Road re-subdivision creating three lots in District 3. Commissioner Turner moved to approve the first three items together; Commissioner Gatlin seconded and the motions carried unanimously.
Separately, the commission approved the Lapadigga State subdivision following a motion by Commissioner Townsen and a second by Commissioner Gatlin. The board also approved removal of specified county inventory items.
During district reports, commissioners discussed roadwork scheduling and techniques. Commissioner Turner described pothole repairs, two major paving projects (including work connected to a planned roundabout) and noted herbicide spraying scheduled for next week. Commissioner G. said crews were preparing for a chip-seal in the Blackman Rubies area.
Commissioner Towns asked staff for an update on the animal shelter parcel the commission has discussed previously. Staff reported that the city has completed division-of-land approvals and is working to have the plat signed and recorded; once recorded, the property can be treated as a separate parcel and the county can complete closing. Commissioner Towns also pressed staff (Drew and Mr. Massie) for a quick explanation of cost differences between chip seal and plant-mix paving. Staff explained that reclaiming and re‑chip-sealing a road typically costs about half what plant mix does when the base can be reclaimed, but costs rise toward plant-mix levels when substantial leveling or spot plant-mix is required.
The commission closed the meeting with congratulatory remarks for the sheriff’s rodeo and county graduates and adjourned to meet again at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 2nd.
