County public defender staff briefed the committee on May 19 on a one‑year renewal agreement with the City of Cleveland for legal representation of indigent defendants in 12 municipal courts and Cleveland Housing Court.
Presenters said the contract, valued at approximately $2,718,622, is paid for by the city and has operated in similar form for over 20 years with the county public defender’s office providing representation except in conflict cases. "We provide all the legal representation with the exception of cases where there are conflicts," the presenter said.
Council members asked whether the city’s payment ever runs out and staff said the county budgets the work with known staffing costs and attempts to stay within the agreement; if actual costs exceed the agreement, county budget adjustments would be required. The committee moved the resolution (20260137) to the full council under second‑reading suspension.
What happens next: the full council will consider the renewal; staff said the city funds the agreement and county will monitor costs against the budgeted amount.
