Westonka board honors speech and athletic standouts; sees construction progress

Board members and administrators used the meeting to recognize student achievements and to update the public on facility work and finances.

Megan, the district speech coach, told the board the program sent five students to the state tournament — a program high — and named competitors Henry Rugimer, Orin Butterfield, Zachary Van Nelson, Connor Christensen and Hannah Christian Christensen. Megan said the group recently competed at a national tournament and that Hannah will compete at the NSDA event in Richmond, Virginia. "I absolutely love these kids, and I love what I do," Megan said.

Administrators presented drone footage and a construction update showing the new north entrance in use, courtyard work underway, CTE machine shop and theater/LRC demolition in progress, and a gym schedule aiming for summer completion ahead of fall athletics. Board members noted that administrative spaces have been turned over and that temporary classroom relocations ended around winter break.

Finance and enrollment: Kathy reported enrollment as of May 1 was 2,456 students and offered an April financial recap; the treasurer read a list of donations and a year-to-date contributions figure that appears in the transcript as "256,54428" (likely $256,544.28). The finance presenters said receipts and expenditures appear on track for the fiscal year as the district prepares its final budget and upcoming audit.

Why it matters: student recognition is a community milestone and the facility work will affect summer operations and fall athletics. Administrators said more construction turnovers are expected this summer as classrooms and program spaces open in phases.
