Nielsen and other residents raised a long-standing safety concern about a large burn pile near town, noting dense fuel loads and the potential for embers on dry, windy days. Residents urged mitigation options — chipping, soaking with water trucks, or a controlled burn — but presenters emphasized legal and liability constraints. One volunteer said, "we literally can't do it or we're 100% on our own for the liability" unless the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District grants permission. Board members said they will continue pushing partner agencies for permitted mitigation and improved interlocal support.
