Guidance report: MVU students outperform national averages on SAT, district expands dual-enrollment and senior opportunities

Guidance counselor Tyler Mates presented student assessment and postsecondary-preparation data to the board, saying the district’s PSAT average was 976 (compared with a cited national average of about 920) and that the school-year-to-date SAT average is 1128 versus a national average near 1024–1028.
Mates said 52 students were currently taking AP exams and reviewed a five-year breakdown of students scoring 3 or higher on AP tests; he noted past-year participation and pass-rate swings but highlighted a cohort of high achievers (one student scored 1340 on the PSAT). Mates emphasized that a 3 may be accepted for college credit at many institutions and encouraged students to check College Board credit policies for specific colleges.
The guidance team reported 81 dual-enrollment vouchers used so far this academic year and 13 students participating in early-college programs (seniors only). Mates said one exam per student per year is covered by a grant and that dual-enrollment supports — online, in-person, and concurrent classes — remain an important pathway for students to earn college credit while still in high school.
On senior outcomes, Mates told the board the senior class has thus far reported more than $600,000 in scholarship offers, with 136 graduates projected and about 30% indicating plans to enroll in college immediately. The remainder report plans that include workforce entry, trades, military service, part-time work or not-yet-identified plans; the board learned district staff are collaborating with VSAC to administer a comprehensive senior survey and to attempt alumni tracking via clearinghouse data for students who attend college.
Mates and board members said the district will continue to refine how it measures outcomes (college, workforce, apprenticeships) and will report more complete senior-survey results after data collection closes at the end of May.
