First public hearing held on Dorchester County’s proposed FY2027 budget; clerk explains department increases

Dorchester County conducted the first of three public hearings on Bill No. 2026-5, the proposed FY2026–2027 Annual Budget & Appropriation Ordinance, which the Council will consider for adoption on May 19, 2026.
Resident Sharon Smith asked about budget increases. County Manager Jerry Jones said the Elections Office budget rose because of state-required new voting machines and that several department budgets increased due to redistributing insurance liability and fringe benefits to show more accurate department expenses. Jones said the modernization effort responds to auditor guidance and is intended to increase transparency in departmental budgeting.
No adoption vote occurred at the May 5 hearing; the Council closed the public hearing after hearing comments and will continue deliberations and additional hearings before the May 19 adoption consideration.
