Dolores County commissioners hear social services caseload update; approve minutes and move to executive session

Dolores County commissioners heard a social services update that included caseload totals, an explanation of a fraud repayment and a change to the department's childcare wait list before approving meeting minutes and moving into a closed executive session.
Phyllis, who delivered the social services update, told commissioners, "We have 528 total cases for our eligibility programs," listing program types that include adult financial assistance, Medicaid and food assistance. She reported 40 child support cases, 94 reviewed "leak" cases this year, one protection case closed in February, three open child protection cases and one childcare case currently pending.
Asked about a line labeled "fraud repayment," Phyllis said, "There was an investigation that was done on an individual in the community, and that is then paying back the benefits that they owed to the county," clarifying the county is recovering benefits from an individual rather than paying another entity.
Phyllis also announced nominations for a child welfare recognition award: "I nominated Katie and Miranda for a child welfare recognition award. And state has approved that award, so they will be coming to join us during our next county commissioner meeting in April," and said the state representatives are expected around 10 a.m.
The board approved a motion to accept the record of proceedings for 03/02/2026; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote. The Chair then moved to adjourn the current meeting and convene the Board of Health; that motion also passed.
Later in the session a committee member requested an executive session "with consent to CRS 24 6 dash 4 0 2, or b for to receive legal advice from counsel," noting attorney-client privilege and that no minutes or recordings would be kept. The Chair made a motion to move into executive session as stated and commissioners approved the motion.
The meeting proceeded into the executive session; the public portion closed after the vote. No formal policy actions or budget appropriations were made on the social services items in the public portion of the meeting.
