Commissioners approve $50,000 planning grant for Diversion Program

The Lewis and Clark County Board of Commissioners on March 17 approved a $50,000 one-year planning grant application to the Montana Healthcare Foundation to support planning for a county Diversion Program for July 1, 2026–June 30, 2027.
Alyssa Spies, Criminal Justice Services Diversion Coordinator, presented the grant application and said staff recommended approval. Commissioner Candace Payne moved to approve the application; Commissioner Andy Hunthausen seconded the motion and the Commission approved it 3-0.
Kellie McBride, Criminal Justice Services Director, clarified the distinction between the County’s existing Pretrial Program and the anticipated Diversion Program, explaining the planning grant is intended to support development of the Diversion Program rather than replace pretrial services. No public comment was recorded on the item.
The approval allows staff to complete planning activities for the Diversion Program during the grant period and to return to the Commission for any implementation decisions that would require formal approval.
