Mason County commissioners approve routine business, adopt proclamations and agreements

At its Sept. 22 meeting in Mason, the County Commissioners Court approved a slate of routine items — paying bills, two proclamations, policy updates, personnel actions, grant agreements and nominations — and adopted a seven-year child welfare services non-financial agreement with the state starting Oct. 1, 2025.
Mason County Commissioners Court met Sept. 22, 2025, in the county courthouse and approved routine business including payment of county bills, proclamations designating Sept. 17–23 as Constitution Week and September as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, updates to procurement policy, and several agreements and personnel actions.
The court voted to pay bills and settle accounts. Commissioners then approved minutes from prior meetings pending additional review requested by Judge Hardin. The court adopted the two proclamations following motions by Commissioner Fred Estes and received a second from Commissioner Buddy Schuessler for the Constitution Week proclamation and from Commissioner Dave Underwood for the Suicide Prevention proclamation.
On administrative matters, the court approved an update to Mason County’s Purchasing and Procurement Policy and approved participation in the political subdivision Workers’ Compensation Alliance after adopting the Workers’ Compensation Renewal Questionnaire with the changes discussed. The court also granted permission to advertise for a part-time Nutrition Assistant position.
The commissioners approved a 2026 resolution authorizing the county match for a Texas Department of Agriculture home-delivered meals grant in the amount of $371.25. They also approved the appointment of election judges and alternate judges for two-year terms ending Aug. 31, 2027 as presented.
The court amended the 2025 and 2026 budgets to provide additional pay for Sonia Martinez — an extra $1.00 per hour for interpreter services, retroactive to July 1, 2025. Commissioners approved a Subrecipient Agreement related to TDEM-administered grant awards associated with disaster declaration DR-4879.
A seven-year County Child Welfare Services non-financial agreement with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services was adopted with a start date of Oct. 1, 2025. The court also approved nominations to the Mason Central Appraisal Board of Directors for the 2026–2027 term; nominees Dave Underwood, Jim Bob Smith and Randy Kruse agreed to serve another term. Commissioner Dave Underwood abstained from the vote on those nominations.
In reports, commissioners and staff updated the court on FEMA Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant (PDMG) activity including planned on-site inspections and preparations for bidding materials and hauling; coordination with NRCS and TDEM on debris management was ongoing. The court discussed a $5,000 bronze plaque referenced in a letter from Lt. Governor Dan Patrick and noted that Mason County will seek a donor or donors to work with the county judge and the Mason County Historical Commission. Eli Castillo reported on attendance at a regional flood-plan workshop and identified potential grants to update FEMA maps and flood gauges and to improve culverts and channels.
