Meriwether County approves $194,137 ambulance chassis order and remount, to be funded through SPLOST

Fire Chief Danny Stephens informed the Board that the county’s quoted chassis price from John Megel is $66,300 and the remount from Custom Truck and Body Works is $127,837, for a combined cost of $194,137. He said the remount project’s estimated completion is about 15–18 months. County Administrator John Gorton confirmed SPLOST funds can be used to finance the project and noted funds can be staged and placed in an interest‑bearing account while awaiting delivery.
Commissioner Adam Worsley asked about fleet size; Chief Stephens said the purchase would support four front‑line ambulances with a long‑term target of seven units in rotation and that several existing vehicles have high mileage. Stephens said chassis typically are considered for replacement around 250,000–300,000 miles, and remounting boxes can extend service life through planned cycles but cannot continue indefinitely.
Vice Chairman Jennifer Snelson offered to research state procurement options that let small counties piggyback on larger orders to reduce per‑unit cost; Stephens said the County would need to be ready to commit if such an opportunity arises.
Commissioner Worsley moved (seconded by Chairman Emmett Collins) to proceed with ordering the chassis, issue an RFP for the remount, and fund the project through SPLOST; the motion passed unanimously.
